Ebru is a form of printmaking, similar to marbling that is said to have originated in the thirteenth century . Ebru was first used as the background of official state papers, and around the edges of commercial registers to prevent people altering the documents or ripping pages out of the commercial registers. This makes sense as the art is hand-made and each piece is one of a kind. Therefore, it is impossible to replicate. I am half Turkish and lived in Istanbul until the age of five before moving to Manchester. I first discovered Ebru when I was doing a project on Turkish folklore as an attempt to re-connect with my culture and history a little more. while researching for this project I did an Ebru course in Istanbul. I really fell in love with the art form and have been learning about it and experimenting with it ever since. I have also recently started playing around with merging it into my other illustrations. I have always loved working with fusion and I love mixing such an old art form with modern work.
